About Doug Clarke

Doug Clarke was a founding member and Senior Technician in the School of Mathematics and Physics at Murdoch University and served as a founding member. He was promoted to Professional Officer in 1975 to allow him to undertake independent research, lecture, and co-supervise honours and postgraduate students. Occupational Health and Safety was one of Doug’s primary responsibilities during his tenure. He played an essential role in setting up numerous courses and contributing significantly to Laboratory Manuals.

Doug’s passion for chemistry education extended beyond his job responsibilities, and he even hosted 30 sessions of chemistry education on the UWA radio station with the help of Irma Whitford and her team. He was involved in several research programs in Chemistry, including the copper process by Jim Parker, Lithium battery, Bromine battery, and the Eucalyptus Project. In addition, he assisted students with their research projects in Physics and other university departments and helped faculty and students in other fields to purchase specialized equipment and receive training.

Doug earned the nickname “Mr Chemical Fixit” for his exceptional problem-solving skills and vast knowledge of all things chemical, which earned him the fondness and respect of numerous staff and students. Doug retired from his position as Professional Officer in the Chemistry Department at Murdoch University in 2008.
